Curious License Plate

Posted by barb on Jul 21, 2005 in Random Thoughts |

Saw this license plate on an SUV in the lane next to me on my way to work:

YREWOM

The SUV also had a “Washington Nationals” sticker on the back. No other bumper stickers. Take a minute to think of what it might be. I had several minutes as I sat in stop and go traffic on my way to the beltway.

Any ideas? Hm?

Here’s what I came up with: “You’re Womb”, and I was very excited! How cool!

Then my lane advanced a bit on this car’s lane, and I was able to look at the driver. I was expecting a young woman…or even a middle-aged woman…or a woman of any description.

Instead, it was a middle-aged man. He looked kind of paunchy, but dressed in a nice dress-shirt and tie. His hair was receding slightly, and he wore substantial looking glasses.

Then his lane pulled him ahead of my lane again. I stared at the license plate, trying to make something different out of it, but I couldn’t come up with anything reasonable. My first guess could certainly be right — he could believe in the freedom of women or he could be driving his wife’s car. He just wasn’t the person I was expecting to go along with my first guess….

Anyone else have any ideas?

The first part, ‘YRE’, strikes me as being ‘wire’ – but WTF the ‘WOM’ would be for is beyond me. Or maybe a more literal reading ‘YRE’ = wirey. ‘Wirey Woman’?
On the other hand, ‘You’re Womb’ strikes me more as a Pro-Life sort of thing, b/c that would mean ‘You Are Womb’ – aw hell, that’s just mysoginistic! Not only am I NOT my womb, but well, I’d be pretty happy if they’d take that particular organ back, thank you very much.
It is a quandry.

WOM might be an acronym for “Word of Mouth”, but that doesn’t clear things up.
If the first word is “your”, the second would be represented by “ewom”, which doesn’t help. Neither does treating it as “Why Are EWOM”.
It’s also the name “Mowery” spelled backwards, which seems unlikely. (I work with someone named “Mowery”.)

Yeah, I thought about the “Your EWOM” and “Why Are EWOM”. It’s still possible that “YRE” is supposed to be “Your”, since license plates are frequently grammatically incorrect…but that doesn’t help.
“You are womb” would suck, and I should have rammed the guy if that’s what he intended 🙂 It would have been helpful to have some supporting bumper stickers as a key…
Oh, one other clue is that the license plate was a Wildlife Eagle plate; though, I don’t see how that helps any.

The eagle plate reminded me: driving to my lesson yesterday, I saw a VA “Horse Enthusiast” plate with the identifier “ROHIRM”, a very appropriate Lord of the Rings reference.
