Blissful Ignorance

Posted by barb on Sep 9, 2004 in Wedding

My aunt Maggie called me last night to see how I was holding up in the face of all the wedding plans. That’s weird, I thought. Why should I be nervous?

And then I thought a bit more….and realized that THE WEDDING IS ONLY 10 DAYS AWAY. I suppose that should make me a bit nervous.

Truth is, though, that since the dress arrived, I don’t feel terribly nervous. I’m constantly thinking about the wedding, and wondering if there’s something else that needs to be done. But I’m not actively nervous. Pretty much everything is in place. I just need to polish my circlet and print and assemble the programs, and I think that’s all that really needs doing until a couple days before the wedding.

Perhaps this is just the calm before the storm…

More Wedding Notes

Posted by barb on Sep 1, 2004 in Wedding

A few more wedding notes:

  • We had our second, and last, meeting with the minister last Thursday. We went over the ceremony that Andrew and I had put together — most of it is from the materials that he’d given us, with only the readings and benediction from other resources.
  • We’ve made our entree and appetizer selections, so everything on the restaurant side is pretty much decided, since we went over the restaurant lay-out last week with the manager.
  • I continue to knock some of the minor, but nagging, little things off my to-do list: made my garter, decorated my shoes, bought program paper, finished the frames for pictures of our parents’ and granparents’ weddings, and on and on and on.

I’m really hoping that we can have a wedding-free day or two this weekend….

Bride’s Brain

Posted by barb on Aug 30, 2004 in Wedding

As the wedding day looms closer, I’ve noticed that there is less and less content on my blog. In fact, there seems to be less and less content in my brain. I came up with the following to illustrate the phenomenon:

Dress Arrived!

Posted by barb on Aug 27, 2004 in Wedding

Sigh.

The dress arrived at about 10:30 AM this morning. I don’t know if she sent it after getting my I’m-freaking-out-where’s-my-dress e-mail yesterday or what, but she mailed it overnight mail yesterday, and it arrived today. I tried it on, and it looks great (except I need a little help with part of the dress), and I don’t think I need any alterations. Yay!

Freaking out…

Posted by barb on Aug 26, 2004 in Wedding

…and extremely pissed.

This is not a good combination for a bride.

I have three weeks and two days before my wedding. I don’t have a dress. I ordered a dress, and paid in full, sixteen weeks ago. A full four months ago, the dressmaker cashed my check and sent me a reciept. That was the only contact she made. On my measurements sheet I requested that the dress be sent to me August 1, thinking that even if she was a little late, I’d still have a month to get alterations if I needed them.

Sixteen weeks.

According to her webpage (which I’m not giving out right now, since I don’t want Andrew to see the dress), most orders are completed within eight weeks of payment. Eight weeks. It has now been twice that.

According to her webpage, she recommends ordering a dress at least three months before the event. If I had waited that long, I would have been wearing shorts and a t-shirt at my wedding. It’s been more than three months.

Now, I visited her webpage this afternoon, and she’s having Halloween specials. She’s guaranteeing regular orders (i.e. not rush orders) will be delivered in six weeks. And she can’t get me my dress in sixteen weeks?

I was okay until I saw this six week crap on her page. Now I’m pissed. Two weeks ago she said that she anticipated mailing my dress within a week. She mails things priority mail, so if she had, indeed, mailed it last week, it would already be here. It’s not.

I sent her an e-mail yesterday morning, asking (very nicely) what’s going on with my dress. She still hasn’t gotten back to me. She runs an internet business, and she’s either not checking her mail daily, or ignoring mail. I’m not sure which is worse.

I’m freaking out.

And I’m extremely pissed.

Stardust

Posted by barb on Aug 24, 2004 in Wedding

This evening we went to meet with the manager of the Stardust Restaurant, where we’re having the reception. Unfortunately, the manager was about 40 minutes late — her boyfriend’s 15-year-old cat is not doing well, and she needed to help out. Andrew and I are cat-people, so we weren’t mad or anything, just a bit inconvenienced.

We worked out the layout out of the restaurant, and timing for everything. Andrew and I still need to pick entrees and appetizers, but that should be easy. Since it’s all vegetarian, there aren’t as many choices as there would be if we were picking meatly-dishes. (That’s not to say there isn’t a selection, just not as much of a selection — we chose this place partly because they were happy to work with us on the vegetarian-issue. In fact, the chef has come up with a few extra vegetarian dishes that aren’t on the menu for us.)

She is also going to look into what champagne she can get for our toast. This is the only alcohol we’ll be providing — everything else is a “cash” bar, since we’re funding this entire shindig ourselves.

After the meeting, Andrew and I stayed for dinner. Yummy, as always!

ONE MONTH!!!!

Posted by barb on Aug 19, 2004 in Wedding

I’m not panicking, but the wedding is one month from today — September 19. Ack!

Acutally, things are going along fairly nicely. All of the major things are in order (except, perhaps, my dress), and most of the minor things are falling into place.

Things left to do:

  • Pick readings for the ceremony, and finalize the ceremony with our officiant
  • Finalize plans for hair/make-up on the day of the wedding
  • Buy a few odds ‘n’ ends: a basket for cards, a couple more things for the kids’ gift bags, paper for the programs and place cards, guest book pen(s), cake cutting items, a large umbrella (in case it rains that day), etc.
  • Confirm the details of the reception with the restaurant
  • Plan out the lighting for the ceremony with the planetarium director

That’s all I can think of for now, but I’m sure there’s more. But it will all come together.

Hair Consultation

Posted by barb on Aug 18, 2004 in Wedding

The hair consultation went well this afternoon. It turns out that the stylist I talked to doesn’t actually do up-dos herself, but talked with another stylist about doing it for us, and then she’d do styles for the others and everyone’s make-up. She also said that they could open up the salon that day for us, so that everything they need would be handy, which is cool.

Oh, did I mention that Mushi gave me an amazing circlet for the wedding? One worry has been that my head is a bit too small for the circlet (or the circlet is a bit too big…). Well, the hairdressers had a great idea for anchoring it to my head — they are going to do part of my up-do around it. It’s going to look really cool, and I won’t have to worry about the circlet moving around or falling off my head. (I’ll only have to worry about taking my hair down, but of course that’s the least important part.)

She’s going to get back to me in a day or two with an estimate for the cost. Yipes.

Fast and Furious

Posted by barb on Aug 17, 2004 in Wedding

Wedding bits are coming in fast and furious now. Tonight we picked the music for the cellist. I went out to the music school with Andrew where his teacher played several wedding pieces for us in lieu of Andrew’s regular lesson. We’ll be having him play Bach’s Arioso for the processional, Corrette’s Concerto Le Phénix for the recessional and a smattering of stuff for about 15 minutes or so as our guests take their seats.

Yay!

Tomorrow? My hair consultation.

Petticoat Arrived!

Posted by barb on Aug 16, 2004 in Wedding

Well, it’s not the wedding dress, but it’s getting closer. I walked out of the house this afternoon (I’d been working from home), and stumbled over a priority mail package (gee, I’m so glad the mailman knocked on my door). I had been on my way to the optometrist to pick up new contacts, but ran back into the house to see what was in the box (it seemed a bit small for the dress…plus the dress would have been mushed in there). Of course, I also had to try it on…it’s as close to trying on wedding dresses as I’ve come so far.

She said she’ll be mailing the dress later this week. Yay!
